Professor Uffe Nielsen is a faculty member at the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment (HIE), Western Sydney University, specializing in Soil Biology and Genomics. He holds a PhD from the University of Aberdeen (2008), focusing on soil biota distribution and community composition. His research explores links between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, particularly under climate and land-use changes.
Key research areas include soil fauna dynamics, Antarctic ecosystems, drought impacts, and nutrient cycling. He leads projects funded by NSW Department of Climate Change, Queensland Department of Agriculture, and the Australian Antarctic Division. Notable contributions include authorship of *Soil Fauna Assemblages* (Cambridge University Press, 2019) and editorial roles in *Nature Knowledge* and *Ecosphere*.
Recent grants focus on koala habitat restoration, entomopathogenic nematode biocontrol, and rewilding impacts. Awards include a 2024 Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Award nomination for postgraduate supervision. Collaborative work spans global ecosystems, from Antarctica to Australian drylands.
Labs/Teams: HIE Soil Biology & Genomics Theme, Antarctic Long-Term Ecological Research collaborations, and CSU Natural Resource Ecology Lab partnerships.
