Associate Professor Markus Riegler is affiliated with the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment at Western Sydney University. He holds a doctoral degree in Entomology (Dr. nat. tech.) from BOKU–University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria, and a Diplom Ingenieur in Agriculture from the same institution. His research focuses on arthropod microbial symbionts, their ecological roles, and applications in pest and vector management, alongside climate change impacts on insects and eucalypt ecosystems.
Key research areas include Wolbachia symbiont transfer for pest control, climate change effects on insect herbivores, and microbial interactions in pollinators. He has received awards such as the Excellence in Postgraduate Research Award (2020) and the Klaus Fischer Award (2002). His work spans collaborations with institutions like the University of Queensland and ANU.
Grants include projects on entomopathogenic nematodes, stingless bee pollination, and fruit fly biocontrol. Riegler supervises multiple PhD candidates and has contributed to over 100 publications, exploring topics from symbiont dynamics to ecosystem responses under CO2 enrichment.
