Tyler Wood is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of Clinical Education in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education at Northern Illinois University, College of Education. His work bridges clinical athletic training, human movement science, and innovative pedagogy in health education.
- Ph.D. in Kinesiology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- M.S. in Health Sciences, Saint Louis University
- M.A.T. in Athletic Training, Saint Louis University
- B.S. in Exercise Science, Saint Louis University
Dr. Wood's research centers on understanding human movement impairments, particularly in rehabilitation contexts such as post-concussion neuromuscular control and fall dynamics in aging populations. He also investigates creative educational models to enhance clinical training for athletic training students, emphasizing interprofessional collaboration and simulation-based learning. His work often involves interdisciplinary partnerships, especially with nursing and health sciences disciplines.
His recent publications span topics including sub-concussive head impacts in collegiate divers, age-related head acceleration during falls, and pedagogical innovations like case-by-collaboration and medical investigation simulations. These works reflect a strong focus on both biomechanical analysis and transformative health education strategies.
Dr. Wood has been awarded multiple instructional innovation grants from NIU, including projects on:
- Long-term neuromuscular control post-concussion (NIU Research and Artistry Grant, $15,000)
- Interprofessional mass casualty simulation with Nursing (Dean’s Instructional Innovation Grant, $2,500)
- Enhancing anatomy education with interactive projectors (Dean’s Instructional Innovation Grant, $2,500)
He teaches graduate courses in athletic training, including therapeutic interventions and clinical experiences. He advises on clinical education design and is active in curriculum development. While no formal students are listed, his role as Coordinator of Clinical Education suggests significant mentorship responsibilities. He is based in Anderson Hall 231 and can be reached at twood1@niu.edu.
