Tyler Pritchard

Tyler Pritchard serves as a Teaching Professor in the Department of Psychology at Memorial University of Newfoundland's School of Arts & Social Science (Grenfell Campus), where he directs the SHORE Lab (Suicide and Health Outcomes in Rural Environments) and holds provisional registration with the Newfoundland and Labrador Psychology Board. He teaches core undergraduate courses including Introduction to Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Research Methods III while actively supervising honours students.

Dr. Pritchard's research investigates suicide prevention, self-injurious behaviors, and mental health disparities in rural communities through mixed-methods approaches. His work examines how geographic isolation, social determinants, and digital environments uniquely impact mental health outcomes, with emphasis on developmental psychopathology frameworks. Current projects explore connectedness as a suicide protective factor and cultural considerations in Indigenous mental health.

Analysis of his 12 publications (2017-2024) reveals consistent focus on rural suicide epidemiology, digital self-injury discourse, and contextual intervention development. His scholarship bridges clinical psychology, public health, and digital media studies, demonstrating methodological evolution from qualitative bereavement studies to large-scale rural mental health systems research.

Dr. Pritchard maintains active clinical engagement through his recently completed EPPP certification (July 2025) and leadership role as Western Director for the Association of Psychologists Newfoundland and Labrador. His supervision portfolio includes eight honours students across projects examining rural healthcare provider training, Indigenous suicidality, and romantic relationship dynamics in self-injury disclosure.

The SHORE Lab operates as an interdisciplinary hub connecting community stakeholders, healthcare providers, and policymakers. Current initiatives include the Three-Step Theory of Suicide study on connectedness constructs and partnerships with Western Health for rural mental health service development, emphasizing community co-creation in intervention design.
