Tyler Marghetis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cognitive and Information Sciences at the University of California, Merced. He also holds the position of Omidyar Complexity Fellow at the Santa Fe Institute. His research explores cognition and communication across interconnected, multiscale systems, ranging from neural processes to sociocultural dynamics.
Research Interests: Marghetis investigates how thought and behavior settle into stable patterns ('regimes') and undergo sudden shifts ('ruptures'). His work spans diverse contexts, including mathematical insight, scientific paradigm shifts, romantic breakups, cultural revolutions, and artistic improvisation. The Marghetis Lab employs tools such as behavioral experiments, EEG, historical case studies, and computational modeling to study these phenomena.
Scientific Awards:
- Omidyar Complexity Fellow at Santa Fe Institute
Marghetis fosters an inclusive, anti-racist lab environment that prioritizes intellectual curiosity, collaboration, and rigor. He mentors undergraduate research assistants (e.g., Sandra Chacon) and accepts graduate students through UC Merced’s Cognitive and Information Sciences program. His lab also engages in outreach via Federal Work Study opportunities and interdisciplinary training initiatives.
