Paul Dunscomb

Paul Dunscomb is Professor of History specializing in East Asian History at the University of Alaska Anchorage. His research examines modern Japan, Japanese imperialism, and cultural transformations, with current work analyzing Japanese professional baseball as a lens for understanding societal change during the Heisei period (1989-2009).

Education includes Ph.D. in History from University of Kansas (2001), M.A. from SUNY Albany (1995), and B.S. in Communications from Ithaca College (1985). He lived in Japan for two years during doctoral research.

Teaching responsibilities span East Asian civilizations, modern China/Japan, samurai history, World War II studies, and historiography. Publications explore Japanese cultural identity, historical dissent, and media representations.
