Ty Rushing is an Assistant Professor of Practice at the University of Iowa's Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. A Kansas City native, he has broken barriers as the first Black reporter/editor at eight Iowa publications. His work spans investigative reporting, community profiling, and political coverage, earning awards and media features on CNN, MSNBC, and Iowa Public Television. Rushing co-founded the Iowa Association of Black Journalists and directed the Emmy-nominated documentary 'Telling Our Own Story: Ending Racism.' He holds leadership roles in journalism education and advocacy, residing in Iowa City with his wife.
Research interests include racial equity in media, journalism ethics, and amplifying underrepresented voices through storytelling. His career bridges traditional print journalism with digital and documentary filmmaking, emphasizing community impact and civic engagement.
