Ty Abernathy is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Foundations at Mississippi State University's College of Education. He has been a dedicated member of the MSU community since 1995, starting as a graduate student and growing into a beloved faculty member known for his passion for teaching and student engagement.
His academic work centers on educational psychology and human development, with a strong emphasis on student success and retention. He played a key role in the Pathfinders initiative, which significantly improved class attendance, leading to university retention rates exceeding 85% and graduation rates over 60%.
Abernathy is best known for his leadership in international education, currently leading more study-abroad trips than any other MSU faculty member. His psychology-focused travel courses take students to cities like Seville, Vienna, Prague, Dublin, Athens, Salzburg, and Leipzig, offering split-level undergraduate and graduate credit applicable across the Colleges of Education and Arts and Sciences.
He emphasizes collaborative learning, stating that he learns alongside his students during these journeys. His courses are designed to be academically relevant and personally transformative, with a focus on experiential psychology education.
