Tuuli-Anna Huikuri is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Political Science within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Zurich. She holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of Oxford (2022) and publishes in leading journals including International Studies Quarterly and Review of International Organizations.
Her academic credentials include:
- PhD in International Relations, University of Oxford (2022)
- MPhil in International Relations, University of Oxford
- BA in International Politics (First Class Honours), King's College London
Her research examines how shifting power dynamics between states and individuals affect international cooperation, with specialization in investment treaties and global governance structures. She investigates tensions between international legal commitments and democratic sovereignty, particularly through mechanisms like exit clauses in investment agreements. Her work bridges political economy and international law to analyze negotiation strategies in economic institutions.
Recent publications reveal a consistent focus on investment regime evolution, combining theoretical analysis of bargaining power with empirical studies of treaty reforms. The 2025 article explores democratic accountability in investment law, while the 2023 award-winning research demonstrates how asymmetric power relations drive bilateral investment treaty modifications, especially in developing economies.
Her scholarly recognition includes:
- 2021 Best Graduate Student Paper Award from the International Political Economy section of the International Studies Association (ISA)
Dr. Huikuri currently leads a research project on "Women in International Economic Negotiations" funded by the IPZ Inequality Research Fund. She previously held an American-Scandinavian Foundation Scholarship at Yale University and the University of Michigan (2019-2020). Her teaching includes graduate courses on International Economic Institutions and Politics of Investment into Developing Countries at the University of Zurich, with appointments scheduled through December 2025.
