Professor Turo Uskali is a leading academic in media and communication studies at the University of Jyväskylä's Department of Language and Communication Studies, part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. His research focuses on digital media evolution, innovation in journalism practices, and ethical challenges in modern communication. He spearheads projects like Journalism Research News—an international news service for journalism studies—and explores emerging technologies like virtual reality (VR) in both education and reporting.
His work critically examines topics such as algorithmic transparency, emotional journalism, and geospatial technology applications in conflict reporting. Notable contributions include studies on Finnish Moscow correspondents during the Cold War, the role of social media in post-publication gatekeeping, and pedagogical innovations using immersive technologies.
Uskali has published extensively on media ethics, digital journalism, and technological adoption. Recent themes include trust in news media among young adults, the ethical use of satellite imagery, and collaborative journalism in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. His research often bridges academic inquiry with practical applications, such as VR campus environments and responsible drone journalism frameworks.
Uskali leads two major research projects: 'Ephemerality and Visuality in Social Media News Content' analyzing fleeting digital content, and 'From the Fog of War' documenting Finnish war correspondents' experiences in Ukraine. These projects emphasize cross-disciplinary collaboration and real-world impact.
