Turkka Lehtonen is a dedicated radiographer at the Tampere University Hospital in the Pirkanmaa Wellbeing Services County, where he specializes in dose planning for radiation therapy and patient care. After initially studying telecommunications electronics at Tampere University of Technology, he shifted to radiography at Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK), graduating in 2012. His role combines technology and human interaction, reflecting his passion for merging precision with empathy. Lehtonen works closely with patients, emphasizing the significance of brief but meaningful interactions during their 15-20 minute treatment sessions.
Lehtonen holds a part-time teaching position at TAMK, where he shares his practical expertise in radiation therapy with students. He also participates in training organized by the Society of Radiographers in Finland and the Oncology Society of Finland. His professional achievements include being awarded Radiographer of the Year in 2023, recognizing his collaborative spirit and commitment to patient care.
He actively contributes to his unit by representing it in the quality group and conducting peer reviews at Turku University Hospital. Lehtonen advocates for continuous professional development and networking with other radiation therapy units. He has developed a patient-centered coloring and picture book for child patients, which remains in use at his clinic. His research interests span radiation therapy, medical imaging, AI applications in healthcare, and medical education.
Lehtonen values diverse internships as critical for professional growth, believing they enhance a radiographer's ability to counsel patients. He envisions future opportunities in teaching at universities or pursuing a master's degree at a university of applied sciences. Outside work, he is a nature photographer and judo practitioner, with additional interests in padel, fishing, and knife-making.
