Tuomas Tammela, MD, PhD, is an Associate Member in the Cancer Biology & Genetics Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). His lab investigates cellular heterogeneity in lung and pancreatic cancers using genetically engineered mouse models, single-cell approaches, CRISPR, and advanced imaging. Dr. Tammela holds an MD/PhD from the University of Helsinki and completed postdoctoral training at MIT.
His research focuses on:
- Molecular drivers of phenotypic heterogeneity in tumors
- Resistance mechanisms to targeted therapies (e.g., KRAS inhibition)
- Aging-related reprogramming of cancer stemness
- Lineage plasticity in tumor evolution
His recent publications emphasize KRAS inhibitor resistance in pancreatic/lung cancers, aging-related tumor suppression via iron homeostasis, and high-plasticity cell states. Article keywords frequently include Cellular Heterogeneity, Lineage Plasticity, Therapeutic Resistance, and Mouse Models.
Awards:
- The Mark Foundation Emerging Leader Award (2021)
- Rita Allen Scholar (2020)
- NCI R37 MERIT Award (2020)
- V Foundation Scholar (2019)
He mentors 5 PhD students and leads a 14-member lab team. Current projects leverage MSKCC resources including organoids and xenografts for translational applications.
