Tulio Bermúdez is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago. Their research focuses on language, gender, sexuality, and the documentation of Indigenous languages of Latin America, particularly Chibchan languages like Naso (Panamá). They hold a Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Austin (2018). Bermúdez explores verbal art through interdisciplinary lenses, examining how linguistic forms like ideophones and puns intersect with social and cultural contexts. They also investigate multilingual expressions of Latinx and queer identities.
Recent publications include a 2020 article in Journal of Linguistic Anthropology and a five-volume Naso Cultural Encyclopedia (2018), covering mythology, traditional songs, verbal art, craftsmanship, and traditional medicine. Courses taught include Language, Gender, and Sexuality (LING 22450), Field Methods (LING 40301/40302), and Verbal Arts (LING 27170). Their work emphasizes fieldwork, linguistic creativity, and the sociopolitical dimensions of language use.
