Tukufu Zuberi

Tukufu Zuberi is the Lasry Family Professor of Race Relations, Professor of Sociology and Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He currently serves as Chair of the Department of Sociology and has held leadership roles including Director of the Center for Africana Studies and Chair of the Graduate Group in Demography. His research focuses on Race, African populations, and the African Diaspora, blending academic work with public engagement through documentaries, television, and social media.

Education includes a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago (1989), M.A. from California State University, Sacramento (1985), and B.A. from San Jose State University (1981). He has been a visiting professor at Makerere University (Uganda) and the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania).

Research interests emphasize critical analyses of race, historical demography, and transnational human rights initiatives. Notable projects include the award-winning documentary African Independence and exhibitions like Black Bodies in Propaganda. He advocates for equality through international collaborations and public speaking.

Zuberi founded TZ Production Company and the Center for Africana Studies. His work bridges academia with creative media, aiming to amplify underrepresented narratives in African and African Diaspora histories.
