Tuija Turunen is a Professor and Leader of Teacher Education at the University of Lapland's Faculty of Education, and holds roles as UArctic Chair, Docent at University of Oulu, and Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Charles Sturt University. Her research focuses on early childhood education, social justice, indigenous education, and teacher training. She leads projects like TIPOTE (inclusive teacher education) and ACCESS (Arctic educational sciences), emphasizing equity and culturally responsive pedagogy.
Key research topics include Sámi language preservation, educational transitions, AI literacy in education, and participatory methods to amplify children’s voices. Her work bridges theory and practice, addressing rural and Arctic contexts. She has received awards for research excellence, including the Outstanding Paper Award (2013) and Vice-Chancellor’s Award (2011).
Dr. Turunen’s recent publications explore AI literacy, Sámi language distance education, and student participation in schools. She collaborates internationally, particularly in Arctic education networks, and advocates for inter-professional teamwork and inclusive policies.
