Tuija Jokinen is an Associate Professor at the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C) of The Cyprus Institute (CyI). She joined CyI in 2021 after completing her Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Helsinki, Finland, and postdoctoral research at the University of California, Irvine, USA. Her research focuses on aerosol formation mechanisms, atmospheric chemistry, and climate impacts, particularly in polar and Mediterranean environments.
Education & Professional Background:
- Ph.D. in Physics, University of Helsinki (Finland)
- M.Sc. in Chemistry, University of Helsinki
- Postdoctoral Research, University of California, Irvine
- Visiting Researcher at TROPOS, Leipzig (Germany)
- Former Head of Unit for ACTRIS calibration centers and leader of the Polar and Arctic atmospheric research group (PANDA)
Research Interests:
- Aerosol precursor gases (e.g., sulfuric acid, amines, iodine oxoacids)
- Sub-10 nm nanoparticle formation and growth
- Climate impacts of aerosols in the EMME region and Arctic
- Role of bases (e.g., amines) in atmospheric nucleation
Recent Research Trends: Her work emphasizes field observations using advanced mass spectrometry and CI-APi-TOF techniques, with a focus on linking aerosol processes to climate feedbacks. Key studies include the MOSAiC Arctic expedition and long-term boreal forest monitoring.
Awards & Recognition:
- ERC Starting Grant (2022) for the BAE project
Advising & Grants: Leads the Aerosol Formation group at CyI, focusing on ERC-funded research into base-driven aerosol formation. Collaborates internationally on projects like MOSAiC and ACTRIS.
Labs/Teams: Active in the CARE-C research center, specializing in Arctic and Mediterranean atmospheric processes.
