Trudy Cowan is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Health & Society at the University of Salford, where she joined in January 2023 after 14 years at Derby University. A registered children's nurse (RN Child) and Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN SN), she is a dedicated advocate for Children and Young People (CYP) and their families, with particular focus on vulnerable populations including parents with learning disabilities and those experiencing health inequalities.
Her research interests span multiple critical areas:
- Child protection systems and safeguarding frameworks
- Health inequality reduction strategies
- Sexual health provision for adolescents
- Transition care pathways
- Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) mitigation
Recent scholarly output demonstrates a strong focus on developing educational tools for child protection training, including simulated conferences and strategy meetings that provide realistic training environments for healthcare students. These resources address critical gaps in multi-agency safeguarding practice through evidence-based simulation design.
Professional recognition includes:
- Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2023)
- Presentations at national conferences including UKSC (2015)
She actively collaborates with Salford Youth Council to integrate authentic CYP perspectives into curriculum development and assessment design. Her teaching spans pre and post-registration nursing programs with specialization in child development, safeguarding, and CAMHS, while also providing specialized training for social workers, police, and radiographers on child protection protocols. As part of the Centre for Applied Health Research, she develops innovative educational resources that bridge theory and practice in child welfare systems.
