Troy Hourie is an Associate Professor at the University of Guelph in the College of Arts, School of English and Theatre Studies. A dual Canadian/American citizen and Métis artist, he is an installation artist and scenographer with over 350 theatre, musical, and opera designs. His work intersects scenography, installation art, puppetry, and intermediality, focusing on wonder, immersion, and audience participation.
- Education: MA in Scenography (Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, 2012), MFA in Scenic Design (University of Massachusetts Amherst, 1997), Bachelor of Interior Design (University of Manitoba, 1991).
His research explores the relationship between the human body and three-dimensional space, using historical devices of wonder to create reflective, immersive experiences. He merges art history, architecture, and theatre design into a practice that layers physical and ephemeral spaces. Recent projects include Odditore (2024), an interactive art installation incorporating shadow puppetry and digital mapping, and Static Apnea (2020), adapted for pandemic contexts. His scientific awards include multiple AUDELCO, Helen Hayes, and Joseph Jefferson nominations, alongside grants from the Ontario Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts.
