Paris-Panthéon-Assas Universityمعرفی
Tristan MATTELART serves as Professor of Information and Communication Sciences at the French Press Institute (IFP), University of Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas, and holds the position of Deputy Director at the Center for Interdisciplinary Analysis and Research on Media (CARISM) laboratory located at 5-7 avenue Vavin, Paris.
His research program critically examines transnational media systems through seven core themes: circumvention of censorship, media-technology-migration intersections, audiovisual piracy networks, international information flows, state propaganda mechanisms, media internationalization theories, and cultural globalization frameworks. This work consistently investigates power dynamics in global communication, particularly focusing on marginalized communities' media practices and alternative information pathways that challenge dominant geopolitical structures.
Analysis of his 2012-2019 publications reveals three dominant trajectories: (1) media's role in forced migration contexts, (2) geopolitical dimensions of state media like Russia Today, and (3) piracy as both cultural access infrastructure and informal economy. His scholarship bridges communication studies with migration research and international relations, emphasizing digital technologies' impact on transnational information inequality and alternative media flows.
Professor MATTELART maintains significant editorial leadership as Associate Editor for Communications: The European Journal of Communication Research (De Gruyter) and serves on editorial boards of Global Media and Communication (Sage), Media and Communication (Librello), and seven other international journals. He has coordinated special issues including the 2019 European Journal of Communication dossier on media/forced migration and 2015 Journal des Anthropologues issue on digital margins.
At CARISM laboratory, he directs interdisciplinary research on media in international contexts, specifically examining how communication technologies reshape transnational connections between migrant communities and homeland societies while navigating censorship regimes and cultural boundaries.
