Tristan MATTELART serves as Professor of Information and Communication Sciences at the University of Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas, specifically affiliated with the French Press Institute (IFP) and the Center for Interdisciplinary Analysis and Research on Media (CARISM). He currently holds the position of Deputy Director of CARISM laboratory located at 5-7 avenue Vavin, 75006 Paris.
Professor MATTELART's research focuses on transnational media dynamics, with particular emphasis on media internationalization, audiovisual piracy, communication technologies in migration contexts, and theories of cultural globalization. His scholarly work critically examines how information flows across borders, the geopolitical dimensions of media, and the relationship between communication technologies and forced migration. He has made significant contributions to understanding media censorship circumvention and the political economy of international propaganda.
His teaching portfolio includes graduate courses such as Internationalization of the Media: Theories and Issues (M2), Geopolitics of the Media and the Internet (M2), and Seminars on Media and International Mobilizations (M2) and Media and International Relations (M1). At the undergraduate level, he teaches Issues of the Internationalization of Information (L3) and Issues of the Internationalization of Fiction (L2).
Professor MATTELART maintains an active editorial presence as Associate Editor of Communications: The European Journal of Communication Research (De Gruyter) and serves on the editorial boards of multiple international journals including Global Media and Communication (Sage), Media and Communication (Librello), and Comunicação e Sociedade (Universidade do Minho, Portugal). His 2023 co-edited volume "Digital Platforms and the Global South" represents a significant contemporary contribution to understanding power relations in global cultural industries.
His academic leadership extends to coordinating special journal issues on critical topics such as "Media, communication technologies and forced migration" (European Journal of Communication, 2019) and "Cultural diversity policies in Europe" (Global Media and Communication, 2014), demonstrating his commitment to advancing scholarly discourse on pressing global communication issues.
