Tristan Carter is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at McMaster University, specializing in archaeology with a focus on prehistoric stone tools, obsidian sourcing, and Aegean-Anatolian interactions. His research spans the Paleolithic to Bronze Age periods, analyzing lithic industries, material culture, and early human dispersals.
- Key projects include the Stelida Naxos Archaeological Project and studies on obsidian exchange networks in the Mediterranean and Near East
- He employs geochemical methods (EDXRF, SEM-EDS, PGAA) and geophysical surveys to investigate prehistoric technology and societal complexity
His work challenges established narratives about ancient Greek society through material analysis of tools and settlement patterns. Recent publications explore Middle Paleolithic behavioral insights, Neolithic obsidian consumption, and early hominin adaptations to climate extremes.
Teaching roles include courses such as Lithics Analysis (ANTHROP 3LA3), Archaeology of Neanderthals (ANTHROP 4KK3), and World Archaeology (ANTHROP 2WA3), covering topics from prehistoric technology to archaeological ethics.
