Trine Stensrud

Trine Stensrud is a Professor in Sports Medicine at the Department of Sports Medicine, Norwegian School of Sport Sciences (NIH). She has been employed at NIH since 1991, progressing from engineer in the pulmonary lab to associate professor (2008-2019) and professor (2019-present). She served as head of the bachelor program in "Physical Activity and Health" from 2008-2019 and as program director for "Exercise, Health and Performance" from 2019-2023.

Dr. Stensrud earned her PhD from NIH in 2008 with the dissertation "Exercise-Induced Asthma in different climatic conditions." Her academic journey began with a master's degree from NIH in 1992, establishing her foundation in sports medicine and respiratory physiology.

Professor Stensrud's research focuses on respiratory and exercise physiology, particularly examining respiratory health in various athletic populations. Her work spans elite athletes, recreational athletes like triathletes and ultra-runners, young swimmers, and childhood cancer survivors. She investigates lung function development during puberty and studies the prevalence of injuries and diseases among young handball players.

Her extensive publication record demonstrates expertise in pulmonary function testing, exercise-induced respiratory conditions, and sport-specific health challenges. Recent work examines breathing disorders in adolescent athletes, bone health in female runners, and the psychological aspects of athletic performance and injury. Her research often employs multidisciplinary approaches to address complex sports medicine questions.

She has supervised numerous research projects and students, particularly focusing on the "Development and Injuries among Norwegian Adolescent Handball Players." Her teaching responsibilities include Exercise in Medicine, lung diseases and physical activity, respiratory and exercise physiology, physiological test methods, and outdoor training.

Professor Stensrud leads research within the pulmonary physiology domain at NIH, collaborating with clinical and research teams to investigate respiratory challenges in athletic populations across various sports disciplines.
