Trine Hvoslef-Eide is a professor at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Faculty of Biosciences, Department of Plant Sciences. She has been a core academic staff member since 1983, with expertise in plant biotechnology and urban agriculture. She leads the National Centre for Urban Agriculture (NCUA) and NMBU's Sustainability Arena 'GreenSmart'. She is also a member of the Norwegian Biotechnology Advisory Board (2019–2023).
Her research focuses on plant biotechnology, including tissue culture, genetic modification, somatic embryogenesis, and abscission, with a recent shift toward urban agriculture and circular economy models. She explores sustainable alternatives such as reducing peat use and recycling urban waste for food and ornamental plant production. Since 2013, she has pioneered transdisciplinary approaches in urban horticulture and sustainable city development.
She is actively involved in education, offering courses such as Plant Biotechnology: Cell- and Tissue Culture and Genetic Modifications (BIO244), Genetically Modified Plants - Case Study (BIO351), and Urban Agriculture in Practice, which launched as a pilot in 2020 and became a regular program in 2022. She also contributes as a guest lecturer across multiple faculties including BIOVIT, MINA, LANDSAM, and the NMBU Business School.
She has led significant research projects such as SiEUGreen - European and China Innovation for Green and Smart Cities and has contributed to international capacity building in bioenergy. She is the academic lead behind NMBU’s new 2-year Master’s program in Urban Agriculture – A Transdisciplinary Approach for a Circular Economy in Urban and Semi-Urban Areas, launched in August 2021.

Trine Hvoslef-Eide advises students and leads research teams in plant biotechnology and urban agriculture. She has secured and led multiple research grants, including international collaborations focused on sustainable cities and renewable bioenergy. Her work integrates science, policy, and practical implementation, particularly in the development of green and smart urban environments.
She leads the National Centre for Urban Agriculture (NCUA) at NMBU and co-leads the GreenSmart Sustainability Arena, fostering interdisciplinary research on green infrastructure, urban food systems, and smart city technologies. Her team collaborates across faculties and with international partners in Europe and China.
