Travis Walton is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Structural Biology at Van Andel Institute (VAI). His research focuses on the cytoskeleton's role in health and disease, employing cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to study cellular architecture and identify therapeutic vulnerabilities. Walton joined VAI in 2024, bringing expertise in structural biology and postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School, where he developed the first atomic model of the axoneme (the cytoskeletal backbone of cilia and flagella).
Walton earned a B.A. in Chemistry and Biochemistry/Molecular Biology from Lewis & Clark College and a Ph.D. in Biological and Biomedical Sciences from Harvard Medical School. His postdoctoral fellowship, supported by the Helen Hay Whitney Foundation, advanced understanding of cytoskeletal mechanics and disease mechanisms.
His research interests span structural biology, cryo-EM, and cytoskeletal regulation, with a focus on neurodegenerative diseases. Recent work includes studies on ciliary microtubules and axonemal structures, published in Nature, Nat Commun, and Acta Crystallogr D. In 2025, he received the prestigious Sloan Research Fellowship for his contributions to neuroscience research.
Walton's lab is part of VAI’s Department of Structural Biology, leveraging state-of-the-art cryo-EM facilities to investigate molecular mechanisms underlying diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. He collaborates on clinical trials through VAI’s partnerships, including the VAI-SU2C Epigenetics Dream Team.
Notable achievements include the Helen Hay Whitney Fellowship (2020) and the Sloan Fellowship (2025), alongside over 20 peer-reviewed publications. His work bridges structural biology and clinical applications, aiming to translate molecular insights into diagnostic and therapeutic advancements.
