Travis D. Gatling is a Professor and Interim Director of the School of Dance within Ohio University's Chaddock + Morrow College of Fine Arts, with 27 years of continuous service. He teaches Modern, Jazz, and Ballet techniques alongside Dance Repertory and specialized Black Dance Forms courses.
His educational foundation includes:
- BA in English/Liberal Arts from Norfolk State University
- MFA in Dance Performance from Ohio State University
Professor Gatling's artistic practice focuses on Dance Performance and Choreography, with significant contributions to Black Dance Forms. His expertise spans Modern, Jazz, and Ballet techniques, informed by extensive performance experience under legendary choreographers like Donald McKayle and Merce Cunningham. A pivotal career moment was the premiere of 'My Brother’s Keeper,' showcasing solos choreographed by African American men.
He maintains active creative output through recent commissions such as 'En.Tranced' (2023), performed at both the Gordon Center and Peabody Dance Festival. Professional engagement includes membership in the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD) and leadership as President of the Norfolk State University Dance Theatre Alumni Chapter.
