Prof. Dr. Traugott Roser serves as Professor of Practical Theology at the Faculty of Evangelical Theology, University of Münster, where he directs the Seminar for Practical Theology and Religious Education and serves as University Preacher. His academic leadership spans institutional roles including membership in the Ethics Commission of the Westphalian-Lippe Medical Association and the Supervisory Board of the Bavarian Hospice Foundation.
Roser's research centers on Pastoral Care Theory and Practice, Spiritual Care implementation, and Palliative Care within healthcare systems, with notable contributions to understanding religion in film and LGBTQI+ theological perspectives. His work bridges practical theology with clinical healthcare settings, particularly through his leadership in developing Spiritual Care frameworks that integrate chaplaincy services into mainstream medical practice.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals three dominant thematic trajectories: (1) the theological and practical dimensions of Spiritual Care in healthcare institutions, (2) critical examinations of LGBTQI+ experiences within church contexts, and (3) innovative approaches to pastoral care during crises including the COVID-19 pandemic. His scholarship demonstrates consistent engagement with both theoretical frameworks and practical implementation challenges.
Roser supervises numerous doctoral candidates in practical theology and has secured significant research funding including a DFG grant (RO 2522/6-1) for his Queer im Pfarrhaus project examining non-heteronormative pastoral life forms. His external engagements include leadership roles in the European Association for Palliative Care's Task Force on Spiritual Care and the International Society for Health and Spirituality.
His institutional work includes directing the implementation of palliative care concepts at Augustinum residential facilities and serving as theological director of the Medical-Theology Symposium at the Evangelical Academy Tutzing from 2007-2016. Roser maintains active collaboration with healthcare chaplaincy networks across Europe through the European Research Institute for Chaplains in Healthcare (ERICH).
