Professor John Swinton holds the Chair in Divinity and Religious Studies at the University of Aberdeen, within the School of Divinity, History, Philosophy & Art History. His academic qualifications include a BD and PhD from Aberdeen, alongside nursing credentials (RMN and RNMD). He balances roles as an ordained Church of Scotland minister and interdisciplinary researcher, focusing on disability theology, mental health, and healthcare chaplaincy. His work bridges theology, healthcare, and ethics, with particular emphasis on marginalized communities.
Research interests include disability theology, dementia care, autism and religion, and practical theology’s role in healthcare. He leads initiatives like the Aberdeen Centre for Ministry Studies and the Centre for Spirituality, Health and Disability. Editorially, he contributes to journals like Journal of Health and Social Care Chaplaincy and previously Contact. Collaborations span nursing, medicine, and interdisciplinary projects on spirituality in healthcare contexts.
His teaching covers pastoral care, theology of disability, and healthcare ethics, integrating theology with nursing and medical education. Recent publications address spiritual care in healthcare, dementia narratives, and theological responses to disability.
