Tracy A. Weitz is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center on Health, Risk, and Society at American University in Washington, DC. Holding PhD and MPA degrees, she teaches SOCY-335 Birth and Death and CORE-105 Complex Problems Seminar: Abortion Pills Everywhere, focusing on abortion policy and reproductive justice.
Her research examines abortion financing through insurance, nonprofits, and philanthropy; abortion as a cultural product in politics/media; and later abortion/medication abortion demedicalization. She analyzes sociocultural constraints, legal barriers (including Texas’ 6-week ban and Dobbs), and global access patterns using sociological and public health frameworks.
Recent publications reveal trends in post-Dobbs access measurement challenges, criminalization of abortion support, and global medication abortion expansion. Her work bridges sociology, health policy, law, and economics to address reproductive healthcare disparities.
