Tova Bennet is an Associate Senior Lecturer at the Department of Law at Lund University, with additional roles as a Researcher in Criminal Law and Visiting Research Fellow in Health Law and Law and Vulnerabilities. Her work focuses on criminal responsibility, legal philosophy, forensic psychiatry, and methodological questions in legal research. Her research explores the intersection of law and mental health, particularly in cases involving severe mental disorders or disabilities. Current projects include analyzing Sweden’s model for criminal responsibility in such cases and studying compulsory psychiatric treatment as a legal sanction. She collaborates with the Centre for Ethics, Law and Mental Health and the Swedish Board of Forensic Medicine.
Dr. Bennet teaches criminal law principles and interdisciplinary courses in forensic psychiatry, leading the advanced course ‘Criminal responsibility and punishment, with special focus on criminal violence.’ She actively engages with policy actors and publishes on topics like sentencing reform and mental health law.
Her work has been recognized with the 2020 Juridiska Föreningens pedagogiska pris for pedagogical excellence. Key research outputs include analyses of Swedish criminal law’s approach to insanity defenses and critiques of legal practices affecting vulnerable populations.
