Toshi Nishimura is a Research Associate Professor at Boston University's Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering and a core member of the Center for Space Physics. His primary research focuses on auroral phenomena, solar-terrestrial interactions, and magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere (MIT) coupling mechanisms. He holds a PhD from Tohoku University (2009) and has held appointments at UCLA and Nagoya University before joining BU in 2016.
His work examines auroral substorms, STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement), proton auroras, and the dynamics of magnetospheric energy transfer. Notable contributions include discovering new energy transport pathways from Earth's dayside to nightside magnetosphere, elucidating fine-scale auroral structures via 4K imaging, and co-editing the book Cross-Scale Coupling and Energy Transfer in the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere System (Elsevier, 2021).
Awards include the Macelwane Medal (AGU, 2016), Young Scientist Prize from Japan's Minister of Education (2016), and multiple recognition for student research (2007-2015). His research leverages satellite data (THEMIS, DMSP), ground-based imagers, and citizen science observations to bridge micro-scale plasma processes with global space weather impacts.
