Rumi Nakamura serves as Group Leader at the Institut für Weltraumforschung (IWF) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and as a Lecturer (Privatdozent) at the Institute of Physics, University of Graz. With over three decades of experience in space physics research, she has established herself as a leading authority in magnetospheric studies.
Dr. Nakamura earned her PhD in geophysics from the University of Tokyo in 1990. Her career path includes research positions at Japan's National Institute of Polar Research, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Nagoya University, and the Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik before joining IWF in 2001.
Her research focuses on magnetospheric plasma physics with particular emphasis on magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling, solar wind interactions, and substorm dynamics. Dr. Nakamura is renowned for her work analyzing bursty plasma flows in the nightside magnetosphere and their relationship to auroral breakups, which has significantly advanced our understanding of space weather phenomena.
Dr. Nakamura has received numerous prestigious honors including AGU Fellowship, the Julius-Bartels Medal, and recognition as a top 1% cited scientist in geophysics. She maintains active membership in multiple international academies including the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and the International Academy of Astronautics.
Through her extensive international collaborations spanning Europe, America, Japan, Russia and China, Dr. Nakamura has analyzed data from numerous space missions including ESA's Cluster, NASA's MMS, and Japanese GEOTAIL spacecraft. She currently serves as science co-investigator for ESA's BepiColombo mission to Mercury and the JUICE mission to Jupiter.
