Torsten Matzke is a political scientist affiliated with the University of Tübingen's Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. His primary role was as a Teaching Fellow (2009–2014) at the Institute of Political Science, specializing in Middle East and comparative politics. Since 2014, he serves as Exchange and Study Abroad Officer at Abertay University in Dundee, Scotland. His research focuses on state-business relations, political economy in authoritarian regimes, and socio-economic drivers of political change in the Middle East and North Africa.
Matzke holds a M.A. in Political Science and Middle East Studies from Tübingen (2009), with a thesis analyzing Egypt's agrarian sector under structural adjustment. He conducted research at the American University in Cairo (2010) and St Andrews University (2006–2007). His work emphasizes the political underpinnings of economic development, particularly in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
Teaching highlights include courses on political theory, state-business relations, and the Arab Spring. He co-authored influential studies on the Egyptian Revolution's socio-economic context and autocratic survival strategies post-Arab Spring. His research contributes to debates on economic policy, authoritarian resilience, and development trajectories in the Middle East.
