Steven Heydemann is a distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Tübingen’s Department of Social Sciences (Political Science Institute), affiliated with the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. His academic career includes roles as Vice President of the United States Institute of Peace, Director of Georgetown University’s Center for Democracy and Civil Society, and Associate Professor at Columbia University. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1990), specializing in Syrian political history.
His research focuses on authoritarian governance, Middle Eastern political economy, civil society dynamics, and economic reform. Key areas include the resilience of authoritarian regimes in Syria and Iran, the impact of globalization on philanthropy, and the political economy of reform in the MENA region.
Heydemann’s publications analyze authoritarianism, civil society, and conflict, with notable works like Middle East Authoritarianism (2013) and Authoritarianism in Syria (1999). His recent work addresses Western responses to the Arab Spring and institutional logics in philanthropy.
He is affiliated with the Schlumberger Team at Tübingen and active in professional associations such as the American Political Science Association and Middle East Studies Association. His teaching includes courses on MENA regional order and international relations.
