Dr. Torsten Kathke serves as a Lecturer in American Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, holding the position of wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter since April 2017. He concurrently holds a Guest Fellowship at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) in Hamburg since January 2023.
His research centers on 19th-20th century cultural history with transnational scope, particularly examining intersections of technology, society, and intellectual discourse between the United States and Germany. Key methodological approaches include:
- Analysis of historical narratives in popular non-fiction
- Comparative studies of social diagnostics ("Zeitdiagnosen")
- Cultural impact of communication technologies
- Transnational intellectual history frameworks
Kathke's seminal work Wires That Bind: Nation, Region, and Technology in the Southwestern United States, 1854–1920 (Transcript Verlag, 2017) investigates how telegraphy and railroads accelerated political-economic transformations in the Mesilla region. He extends scholarly engagement through public-facing projects including the research blog "Thus, History!", German-language podcast "Die letzten Detektive" analyzing neo-noir radio plays, and English-language podcast "In Front of Ira" deconstructing romantic comedy tropes.
His academic trajectory includes research appointments at the German Historical Institute in Washington D.C., Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (2014-2016), and current involvement in GIGA's Digital Transformation Lab (DigiTraL) project with Germany's Federal Foreign Office.
