Torrance Fung

Torrance Fung is an Assistant Professor and Chair of the Philosophy & Religious Studies Department at The College of Idaho. He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Virginia (2020) and a B.A.S. in Philosophy and Psychology from the University of California, Davis (2013). His research spans Philosophy of Mind, Epistemology, and 17th/18th Century Philosophy.

Dr. Fung’s work addresses foundational questions in cognitive phenomenology and rationalism, including the role of non-sensory experiences in a priori justification. His historical research focuses on Nicolas Malebranche, analyzing divine simplicity and temporal metaphysics. Recent publications explore the boundaries between sensory and cognitive consciousness, advocating for an acquaintance model of rational intuition.

His publications, such as Cognitive Phenomenology and the Arbitrariness Problem for Rationalism (2025) and Malebranche on Space, Time, and Divine Simplicity (2023), reflect interdisciplinary engagement with metaphysics, epistemology, and religious philosophy. These works emphasize synthetic propositions, participation theories, and the phenomenological basis of dialogue comprehension.
