Torgeir Solberg Mathisen

Torgeir Solberg Mathisen serves as Associate Professor at the Department of Optometry, Radiography and Lighting Design within the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences at the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN), based at Kongsberg campus. He coordinates the Norwegian Vision in Stroke network (synogslagnett.no) and manages the part-time Master in Optometry and Vision Science program.

His educational background includes a nursing degree (2004), Master in Clinical Health Work, Aging and Elderly Care (2015), and PhD in Person-centered health work (2022). Professional experience spans stroke/geriatric nursing at Kongsberg Hospital and health advisory roles with the Norwegian Heart and Lung Association (2016-2017).

Research focuses on post-stroke visual rehabilitation and cerebral visual impairments through the 'Elderly Research' and 'Vision and Brain' groups. His work emphasizes implementation of vision mapping protocols and person-centered approaches for stroke survivors, bridging clinical practice with academic research in neuro-ophthalmology and aging-related visual disorders.

As program manager for the Master in Optometry and Vision Science, he oversees curriculum development and student supervision for MFRS5119 (Visual Rehabilitation after Stroke) and MRES019 (Research Methods). Current leadership roles include board membership in NSF's Professional Group for Ophthalmic Nurses, driving national standards in ophthalmic nursing practice.

He leads the Norwegian Vision in Stroke network, facilitating multi-institutional collaboration on visual impairment screening protocols. His research group activities integrate gerontology, neurology, and optometry to develop evidence-based rehabilitation frameworks for stroke-related vision disorders.
