Torgeir Rinke Bangstad is an Associate Professor and Research Advisor at the Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion at the University of Bergen (UiB). He is affiliated with the Miljøhumaniora research group and holds dual affiliations with UiT The Arctic University of Norway and the Faculty of Art, Music and Design at UiB. His research focuses on cultural heritage, environmental humanities, and the Anthropocene, examining material culture, industrial heritage, and museum studies through interdisciplinary lenses.
His work explores themes such as the temporality of heritage, materiality in architecture, and the ethical implications of conservation in toxic environments. Key publications include analyses of concrete in modernist architecture, the ecological dimensions of heritage, and the intersections of chemistry and cultural preservation in museums.
Dr. Bangstad has contributed to international projects like 'Unruly Heritage: An Archaeology of the Anthropocene,' funded by the Research Council of Norway. His recent lectures include discussions on museum communication, surface affect, and the mutability of place. He actively engages with contemporary challenges in heritage management, emphasizing ecological and ethical considerations in cultural preservation.
