Torbjörn Bergman serves as Professor in the Department of Political Science at Umeå University's Faculty of Social Sciences. His academic work focuses on government power dynamics and democratic processes at both Swedish and European Union levels.
Professor Bergman's research primarily examines the struggle for government power and democratic systems across interconnected national and supranational contexts. He has developed a unique data archive containing comprehensive information on all democratic governments in European parliamentary democracies since World War II, representing an unparalleled resource in political science research.
His recent scholarly output centers on European democracy infrastructure projects, with publications analyzing Norwegian-EU relations and democratic frameworks. Bergman's methodological approach combines comparative analysis with extensive historical data collection.
Bergman leads significant research infrastructure initiatives including REPDEM (until 2025), which forms part of the national DEMSCORE project for collecting democracy and conflict data. He also collaborates with Docent Abrak Saati on research concerning representative democracy in small states.
His research group affiliation includes Political Institutions and Political Parties, with recent projects examining democracy in Kiribati, Vanuatu and São Tomé & Príncipe (2021-2023), European party government databases (2016-2019), and representative democracy in Europe (2012-2019).
