Prof. Toos Daemen is a Full Professor of Tumor Virology at the Department of Medical Microbiology, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Groningen. She holds a Master's in Medical Biology from Utrecht University (1983) and a PhD in Immunology from Groningen (1987). Her research focuses on leveraging innate and adaptive immune systems for cancer immunotherapy, particularly targeting HPV- and HCV-induced cancers using alphavirus vector systems. She co-founded ViciniVax BV in 2009 to develop immunotherapeutic vaccines.
Education:
- PhD (Magna Cum Laude, 1987): University of Groningen
- Master's in Medical Biology (1983): Utrecht University
Research Interests:
- Oncolytic virotherapy using alphavirus vectors
- Immune modulation in tumor microenvironment
- Therapeutic vaccines for HPV and HCV cancers
- Macrophage reprogramming for cancer therapy
Publications (2023–2025) emphasize clinical trials of therapeutic vaccines (e.g., Vvax001 for cervical neoplasia), mechanisms of oncolytic virus efficacy, and macrophage biology in cancer. She collaborates across disciplines, integrating virology, immunology, and oncology.
Scientific Contributions:
- Spin-off company ViciniVax advances alphavirus-based immunotherapies
- Phase II trials for HPV-targeted vaccines
- Expert commentary on mRNA vaccines and cancer immunotherapy
Labs/Teams: Active in the Molecular Virology section at UMCG and leads ViciniVax's preclinical research division. Collaborates with the Department of Gynaecologic Oncology on translational projects.
