Dr. Toon Kuppens is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Organizational Psychology at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. His research focuses on social class dynamics, educational inequality, and intergroup relations, particularly exploring how education-based status influences political attitudes and social identities. He has investigated the ironic outcomes of meritocracy, where higher-educated individuals exhibit negative attitudes toward the less educated, challenging traditional assumptions about tolerance and social cohesion.
Key publications include work on educationism, affective polarization, and the psychological mechanisms behind political preferences for higher-educated politicians. Kuppens has received the Heymans Small Collaborative Research Grant (2023) and contributed to datasets like the UNDPOLAR survey on political polarization. His media engagements address societal issues such as populism, refugee policies, and the social impact of educational disparities.
He actively participates in academic networks, presenting research on topics like intergroup threat and societal discontent. His work intersects with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to reducing inequalities and fostering peaceful societies.
