Toomas Siitan is Professor of Musicology at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (EAMT), with additional roles as Visiting Professor at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music (2022-2024) and Senior Research Fellow at the Arvo Pärt Centre (since 2023). Previously, he served as Head of Musicology Studies (2018-2023) and Head of the Musicology Department (2013-2018) at EAMT. His academic career began in 1986 as a lecturer at EAMT, advancing to Associate Professor (1992-2004) and full Professor (since 2004).
Education includes a PhD (2003) from Lund University (Sweden) and a composer's diploma from Tallinn State Conservatory (1981). Research spans Estonian music history, hymnology, Arvo Pärt's compositions, and Baltic-German musical exchange. Key interests include cultural identity in music, sacred music semantics, and historical performance practices.
Publications focus on Arvo Pärt's tintinnabuli style, Bach's reception in the Baltics, and 19th-century Estonian musical nationalism. Trends include interdisciplinary analysis (theology/semiotics) and reconstructing historical Baltic music practices.
