Tonya Walker

Tonya Walker is an Associate Instructor in the Legal Research & Writing Department at the Florida A&M University College of Law, where she has been teaching since August 2011. She previously served as an Assistant Professor of Lawyering Process at Florida Coastal School of Law and as an Adjunct Professor teaching foundational legal skills.

Education:

• J.D., cum laude, Florida State University College of Law (2002)
• B.A. in Criminal Justice, University of North Florida (1996)

Her research and teaching interests focus on legal education reform, particularly in first-year legal writing curricula. She advocates for replacing traditional appellate briefs with more practical legal documents such as motions and emphasizes virtual engagement, peer review, and curriculum revitalization in legal instruction. Her work centers on enhancing student preparedness through realistic skill development in research, writing, negotiation, and client counseling.

Professor Walker has co-presented at several national legal education conferences, including workshops at Stetson University, University of Florida, and Nova Southeastern College of Law, addressing innovations in teaching methods and virtual classroom connectivity.

She is licensed to practice in Florida and actively contributes to community initiatives, including organizing fundraising events for the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
