Prof. Tony Wong is a Chair and Professor in the Department of Astronomy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on studying the interstellar medium (ISM) in nearby galaxies to understand galactic structure, dynamics, and star formation. He holds a Ph.D. in Astrophysics from UC Berkeley, an M.A. in Astronomy from UC Berkeley, and a B.A. in Physics and Astronomy from Harvard University.
Research Interests: Molecular Clouds, Star Formation in Nearby Galaxies, Evolution of Disk Galaxies. His group uses CO observations to explore links between molecular clouds, galaxies, and star formation rates. They also investigate galaxy disk dynamics through gas studies. Recent work includes studies of 30 Doradus, the LMC/SMC, and the EDGE-CALIFA survey.
Publications Trends: Prof. Wong's work emphasizes high-resolution observations of molecular clouds and galactic environments. Key themes include star formation feedback mechanisms, molecular gas dynamics in low-metallicity systems, and large-scale surveys like SDSS-V and EDGE-CALIFA. His research bridges theory and observation, addressing galaxy evolution and quenching processes.
- Awards: Multiple appearances on the Excellent Teachers List.
- Courses Taught: ASTR 210 (Introduction to Astrophysics), ASTR 405 (Planetary Systems), ASTR 406 (Galaxies and the Universe), ASTR 506 (Galaxies).
Labs/Teams: Leads the Tony Wong Research Group, collaborating on projects like the CARMA Survey toward Infrared-bright Nearby Galaxies (STING) and the APEX-CALIFA survey. Active in ALMA and SOFIA observational efforts.
