Tony Watts is a Professor of Marine Geology and Geophysics at the University of Oxford, holding roles as a Senior Research Fellow (Visiting Fellow) and Leverhulme Trust Emeritus Fellow. His research focuses on Earth's crust and upper mantle beneath ocean basins and margins, leveraging seismic, bathymetry, gravity, and magnetic data.
Research interests include submarine volcanism, oceanic plate flexure, magmatism in rifted margins, tectonic processes, long-term sea-level change, and gravity/topography anomalies. His work bridges solid Earth dynamics with ocean-atmosphere interactions, with applications to energy exploration in sediment-rich regions.
Publications include the seminal Isostasy and Flexure of the Lithosphere (2nd Ed., 2023, Cambridge University Press), a critical text in geodynamics. Awards include the Leverhulme Trust Emeritus Fellowship, recognizing his contributions to Earth sciences.
