Tony Spanakos

Anthony Spanakos is a Professor in the Department of Political Science and Law at Montclair State University, affiliated with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds an AB from Princeton University, and MA/PhD from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Previously, he taught at Tufts University, Manhattanville College, and Touro College, among others.

His research focuses on citizenship, democratization, and political economy in Latin America and Asia, with a specialization in Brazil, Venezuela, and BRICS nations. He has held visiting roles as a Fulbright Professor at the University of Brasilia (2002) and the Institute for Advanced Study of Administration in Venezuela (2008), and as a Visiting Fellow at Singapore’s East Asia Institute (2009, 2017).

Spanakos co-edits the Conceptualising Comparative Politics book series with Routledge and has authored articles in journals like Comparative Political Studies and Latin American Politics and Society. His work bridges political theory and popular culture, such as analyzing Daredevil through Hobbesian/Schmittian frameworks.
