Tony Michels is the George L. Mosse Professor of American Jewish History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He specializes in American Jewish history, Yiddish culture, Russian Jewish history, socialism, working-class history, and nationalism. His research bridges transnational movements and cultural identity.
Education: Ph.D. and M.A. from Stanford University, B.A. from the University of California. He has authored/co-edited major works such as The Cambridge History of Judaism: Volume 8 and Jewish Radicals.
His teaching spans courses on Jewish-American experiences, political history, labor movements, and comparative studies of Zionism and anti-communism. Advised students include Erin Faigin, Alex Scheepens, and Ri Turner. His work often explores intersections of ethnicity, class, and ideology in 20th-century America and beyond.
