Jonathan Karp is an Associate Professor of History and Judaic Studies at Binghamton University. His research bridges Jewish intellectual, cultural, and economic history, exploring Jewish roles in modern economies and related stereotypes. He earned his PhD from Columbia University and a BA from Tufts University. Karp has served as Executive Director of the American Jewish Historical Society (2010–2013).
His major works include The Politics of Jewish Commerce (2008), Chosen Surrogates (in progress), and co-edited volumes such as The Cambridge History of Judaism in the Early Modern World (2017) and World War I and the Jews (2017).
Research focuses on Jewish economic history, Christian-Jewish relations, and African American-Jewish cultural intersections. Recent projects analyze race and ethnicity in American Jewish experiences and transnational Jewish history.
Publications span peer-reviewed articles, edited collections, and media commentary, addressing topics from rock 'n' roll entrepreneurship to modern Zionism critiques. He actively engages with public history through exhibitions and interdisciplinary collaborations.
