Tony Loughland

Tony Loughland is an Associate Professor and Head of School at the School of Education, University of New South Wales. With a focus on bridging theory and practice in education, his research includes projects on mentoring conversations during professional experience, professional growth cultures in schools, and graduate teacher job retention. He holds a PhD from UTS Sydney (2007) and has served as Deputy Head of School (Research) and in leadership roles for academic governance.

• Education: BTeach (1994), B.Ed (Hons) (1998) from UTS Sydney; PhD (2007) UTS Sydney.
• Research Focus: School-based teacher professional learning, teacher recruitment/retention, curriculum reform, and graduate teacher development.

His 2022 leadership of the Ambassador Schools Research Centre and 2019-2020 NSW DoE Rural and Regional Schools Research project highlights his engagement with policy and practice. Awards include the Erasmus Teaching Fellowship and multiple UNSW Arc Awards. Tony actively supervises Scientia PhD students and has successfully guided ten PhD candidates to completion.
