Tony Lloyd-Jones

Tony Lloyd-Jones is a Reader and Course Leader in International Planning and Sustainable Development at the University of Westminster's Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, where he has worked since 1994. He also serves as Director of Research and Consultancy at the Max Lock Centre, an international development research unit. His career spans both academic and practical experience, having worked previously as a practicing architect, urban designer, and planner internationally and in the UK.

His research focuses on strategic planning for sustainable development, urban and regional environmental management, and planning for resilience and disaster risk reduction. Lloyd-Jones has particular expertise in the role of informal economies in urban development, having conducted extensive research in Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. His work often bridges academic research with policy implementation through organizations like UN-Habitat and DFID.

His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on urban informality, sustainable neighborhood planning, and the application of typo-morphological analysis to urban development challenges. The research output shows strong continuity in examining how physical urban form interacts with social and economic processes, particularly in contexts of rapid urbanization and poverty.

Lloyd-Jones has supervised multiple PhD students to completion and currently serves as director of studies for several ongoing doctoral projects. His professional activities extend to external examiner roles at other institutions and service on the Major Disaster Management Commission of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.

His teaching and research are deeply informed by his extensive international development experience since the late 1970s, including his significant role as Urban Policy Adviser to DFID from 1998-2004, during which he represented UK and EU governments at UN-Habitat meetings in Nairobi and New York.
