Tony L. Talbert is a Professor of Social/Cultural Studies Education and Qualitative Research in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction at Baylor University's School of Education, where he has served since 2002 after 30 years of academic leadership roles including department chair and associate dean at multiple institutions. His career spans 39 years across public schools, universities, and governmental organizations, centered on "Education As Democracy" – an integrative framework examining stakeholder empowerment through activist engagement in political, economic, and social issues.
Dr. Talbert's educational background includes:
- B.A. from Stephen F. Austin State University (1986)
- M.A. in American Studies from Baylor University (1991)
- Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (Social/Cultural Studies Education and Qualitative Research) from University of Houston (1998)
His research synthesizes social/cultural foundations, democracy education, and critical consciousness through qualitative and ethnographic methodologies. Current work focuses on dismantling power imbalances via the Critically Conscious Reciprocal Mentoring (CCRM) framework developed with international colleagues, which reimagines mentoring as dialogical and reflexive practice grounded in equity and inclusion principles.
Recent publications demonstrate his applied qualitative approach to contemporary educational challenges, including ageism in workforce reentry and pandemic-induced emergency remote teaching transitions. These works reflect his commitment to data-driven discourse that informs public understanding of educational equity issues.
Dr. Talbert's scholarly recognition includes:
- 2017 Baylor University Honors College Distinguished Faculty Award
- 2014 McGraw-Hill Distinguished Scholar Award
- Multiple Baylor teaching awards and lecture invitations
- 2011 inaugural Baylor University Fellow
- University of Houston research awards
As an academic mentor, he has chaired over 100 graduate theses/dissertations while serving on editorial boards for national journals. His 2013 return to high school teaching after 23 years informed award-winning research on educator reintegration. Current collaborative projects examine critically conscious student/teacher empowerment with global faculty partners.
Dr. Talbert leads the multi-institutional Critically Conscious Reciprocal Mentoring (CCRM) research team with Baylor University and University of Idaho colleagues, developing conceptual frameworks that transform traditional mentoring hierarchies into egalitarian learning communities across formal and informal educational spaces.
